Mia LaBerge
An art teacher turned artist, Mia LaBerge has been painting for over 15 years.
Her paintings and prints are collected nationally and she currently exhibits
with several Virginia galleries. Her artwork is vibrant in color, rich in
texture and has a painterly edge. LaBerge's paintings focus on the qualities of
ephemeral light on solid form. Calligraphic line and varied brushwork add life
and energy to compositions. Painted forms convey the presence of physical
weight. Her work reflects her formal art training and sensitivity for her
subjects. Containing elements of realism and impressionism her resulting style
is strong and elegant.
Artist Mia LaBerge attended Virginia Commonwealth University, graduated
from JMU in 1992 with a Bachelors in Art and teacher certification, was awarded
Art Achievement Awards by JMU for two consecutive years as well as a Crystal
Theodore Service Scholarship. LaBerge is a past art teacher for Loudoun County,
City of Harrisonburg, the private Hunter McGuire School as well as for several
Art Camps and Enrichment programs. This year she also added volunteer service
as Exhibits Chair for Central Shenandoah Arts and Fundraising Chair for OASIS Gallery.
"The Shenandoah Valley has many small towns and farms hidden in the foothills
of the Blue Ridge, Alleghany and Massanutten Mountains. Around the bend of every
road reveals a scene I want to capture. I live with what I paint and observe my
subject matter everyday. My recent artwork has become a mirror to my immediate
surroundings and tries to convey my visual experience in rural Virginia. I am
painting in a traditional way, focusing on still life, landscape, animals, and
portraits."
"I use oil paint because of its expressive qualities. It has color saturation
and transparency plus infinite subtleties of texture produced through the hands
of the artist."
