Duck, Duck, Goose
Another playful and fun title for a serene and elegant piece of art. This painting captures these docile birds as they relax in the shade of the homestead. Using her talent for portraying light, the artist paints a third duck almost hidden in the shadows to the left of the painting. Available as an original framed or unframed, or as a print. 16 x 20

Return to Chincoteague
In the year 2002, I entered the Federal Duck Stamp Art Contest for the 30th time. In previous years, I had come close to winning the contest, but had never been fortunate enough to take first place. This time, I decided to go for broke, spending nearly six months on my entry in 2002. With the aid of computer software, I created over 500 preliminary compositions in search of the unbeatable image. I tried every composition imaginable, referring to thousands of photographs I had taken of wetland habitats and waterfowl over the past 30 years. Fortunately, by the grace of God, I found the right composition this time with this majestic painting of light.
Now that I have accomplished my goal of winning the Federal Contest, I can move on to other things, such as painting creative pictures for wall hangings and fine art purposes. I have done very little of that over the past 20 years because of my preoccupation with and passion to compete in duck stamp contests. Acrylic on board. Competition quality.

Canvasback Pair
Original Painting:
Acrylic on Board.
Quality: Competition.
Placed 2nd in LA Duck Stamp Contest 2000.
To me, the Canvasback is the most powerful and appealing of the duck varieties. I'll never forget the January day in the mid 60's when I was in my blind on Six-Mile Lake in the Atchafalaya Basin. I was alone on the lake on the last day of duck season. In the distance about a half mile away I could see a large flock of cans over the Atchafalaya River. I started calling, and to my surprise the flock began to come towards me. Before I knew it they were circling my decoy spread with the sound of wings breaking wind, getting lower with each pass. After about five passes over my spread of 75 decoys, the flock of around 300 cans dropped into my decoys like a jet plane with much noise and splashing of water. What a thrill!
