Canvasback Pair
Original Painting:
Acrylic on Board.
Quality: Competition.
Placed 2nd in LA Duck Stamp Contest 2000.

To me, the Canvasback is the most powerful and appealing of the duck varieties. I'll never forget the January day in the mid 60's when I was in my blind on Six-Mile Lake in the Atchafalaya Basin. I was alone on the lake on the last day of duck season. In the distance about a half mile away I could see a large flock of cans over the Atchafalaya River. I started calling, and to my surprise the flock began to come towards me. Before I knew it they were circling my decoy spread with the sound of wings breaking wind, getting lower with each pass. After about five passes over my spread of 75 decoys, the flock of around 300 cans dropped into my decoys like a jet plane with much noise and splashing of water. What a thrill!

Elegance
Here is a bird painting I did around 1980 in my early career typical style. My interest in birds began as a youngster long before I ever dreamed of painting them. My art-form in those early days of life was taxidermy. The Red-Headed Woodpecker in a Magnolia tree with a touch of spanish moss is a typial scene in the deep South. I did many such paintings in the 70's during my early career. Signed and numbered by the artist.

Journey's End
This beaver pond in Orange County Virginia made a perfect setting for the Autumn arrival of Canada Geese. It is mid October and the maples are changing to their glorious hues of Autumn. I walked through and around this pond wearing chest waders, and at different times of day, until I found the best viewpoint from which to created the composition. This oil painting is meticulously crafted in the smooth surface technique of the Old Masters.

Louisiana Duck Stamp 1996
The setting for this painting was taken from Laccassine National Wildlife Refuge which is located in southwest Louisiana. I have done lots of waterfowl photography in this 16,000 acre freshwater marsh that has a wintering population of waterfowl numbering around 600,000 birds...mostly puddle duck species.
